The secret is in the details.
Making truly great coffee at home isn't complicated—but it does require paying attention to a few simple details that make all the difference. Whatever your preferred method, these principles apply to all of them.
1. Start with quality coffee
The most important ingredient is, of course, the coffee. Choose beans that have been recently roasted and come from a known source. At Liberal Tears Coffee, we offer carefully selected roasts—from light and mild to dark and intense—so you can find your favorite.
2. Water matters more than you think
Coffee is 98% water, so water quality is essential. Always use filtered or mineral water, never tap water with high chlorine content. The ideal temperature is between 90°C and 96°C—never use water that's just come to a boil.
3. The right grind for each method
French press: coarse grind
Filter/Pour-over: medium grind
Espresso: fine grind
Moka pot: medium-fine grind
If possible, grind the beans fresh—the difference in flavor is remarkable!
4. The correct ratio
The general rule is 1 gram of coffee for every 15–17 ml of water. For a 250-ml cup, use about 15 g of coffee. Adjust to your personal taste.
5. Clean equipment makes a difference
Old coffee residue leaves a bitter taste. Clean your equipment regularly — it's a simple step that many people overlook.
